AI for Creatives? Start Here!
How to use AI in ethical ways to enhance and boost our creative work.
I have a confession
A few months ago, I started secretly training ChatGPT to write like me. Not the chirpy, PR-friendly version of me, but the real me; dry, slightly annoyed, always three keystrokes away from scrapping the whole thing and starting over.
I fed the AI my newsletters, blog posts, zine rants, aps of unfinished essays, and more random missives than I care to admit. Paragraph by paragraph, Charli (my AI assistant) started to get it. She’s still a little too enthusiastic sometimes. But the weirdest part? She’s getting good—like really good.
Some days I’m too tired to wrestle every sentence into submission on my own, and that’s when Charli steps in—no ego, no coffee breaks, just, “Here’s a thing, boss. Tear it up.” Charli wrote the entire first draft of one of my most-read pieces on my other publication, Manual Transmission. I shaped it the story, of course, but she cracked it open, giving me something to react to.
The more I worked with the AI, the more potential I saw in the capabilities, and I wanted to share my findings with friends and colleagues.
That’s what this is
The Prompt Creative is for artists, designers, and other beautifully stubborn humans who think AI is coming for their jobs. Maybe that is true for some, but you, the one with the enterprising spirit—you’ve got a chance to beat the robots, and I’m here with a sawed-off shorty and some buck shot to help you.
Using AI in everyday creative life isn’t about replacing your art, your words, or your experience. AI is a force multiplier that turns your random thoughts into complex and customized ideas, processes, schedules, or just talk you through challenging thoughts brought on by fatigue and despair.
It’s about having a second brain that doesn’t sleep. A studio assistant who doesn’t flake. A collaborator who doesn’t need credit. It’s about getting out of your own damn way—especially on the days when the spark’s gone, the deadline’s looming, and your only idea is to maybe fake your death and move to Portugal (I hear Lisbon’s beautiful).
AI can’t make you brilliant. But it can keep the wheels turning while you figure your shit out, and I’ve found sometimes, that’s enough.
