How to Write Item Descriptions That Sell
You figured out what to charge. Now let this free prompt help you figure out the hard parts.
You made a thing, and you may have even posted it to your e-commerce shop or marketplace, but now you’re stuck and you have no idea how to describe it in a way that makes people want to buy it. Today’s prompt will help make that process simple.
For a lot of artists, pricing is only half the battle. The real challenge starts when you try to talk about your work in a way that feels honest and confident. You want people to understand the value without sounding like a pushy salesperson—or worse, a self-conscious teenager apologizing for taking up space.
So you try to explain. You talk about how long it took, how the materials cost a fortune, how “it might not be for everyone.” And before you know it, you’ve undermined the whole thing. You’ve planted doubt before they’ve even had a chance to love it.
This prompt is for anyone who freezes up when it’s time to share the thing they worked so hard on. Whether it’s a product listing, a caption, or a one-minute story for a show or pop-up, this will help you talk about your work without disclaimers, caveats, or nervous energy.
The Prompt: Product Descriptions Like a Champ
Copy and paste this into ChatGPT or your favorite AI tool. Make sure to replace the information below marked in BOLD.
I’m a visual artist who wants help writing a short description or post about a piece of my work. I need you to act like as a copy writer who specializes in writing for creative artists. I want the description to sound confident, clear, and reflective of the effort and craft I put into it, without sounding salesy, stiff, or self-deprecating.
Also write this in a way to best trigger an emotional response with the potential customer, because even though this item may not solve a problem, it can create an opportunity for joy and resonance within them.
Here’s what I can tell you about the work:
– The type of work: [e.g., hand-cut collage, ceramic sculpture, large-format oil painting]
– The materials I used: [list materials or techniques]
– What the piece represents to me: [a feeling, memory, theme, or message]
– How I felt making it: [brief emotional reflection]
– What I hope someone feels when they see it or own it: [impact, experience, emotional value]
Additionally I want it written in a way that sounds like [my tone: e.g., sincere and poetic / bold and punchy / raw and vulnerable].
Finally, if any of this is unclear to you, please ask me questions before running the prompt.
